Halloween Cupcakes

A few years back I made a red velvet cake with a white web across the frosting for a halloween party I was hosting. While it looked great, it was my swing at red velvet cake, and didn't turn out all that delicious, plus I was dealing with some harder frosting so it took more effort than necessary to make the cobweb, all of this and no one really ate much of the cake. 

This year I wanted to try something a little more basic and easier to manage at a party (cupcakes are more "grabbable" at a party). Cobweb cupcakes were on my mind, so I decided to add in some spiders for contrast and because, what web doesn't have a spider? 

I used my, newly mastered, delicious chocolate cake recipe and accompanying frosting (find them here). I wanted the frosting to look shiny and streak free, that was much easier with the white one because I chose a 7-minute frosting recipe.

For the webs I used the white 7 minute frosting, for the spiders, I mixed some of the chocolate frosting with the white to create a thinner consistency that would be easier to draw with. 

My spiders aren't exactly the most accurate image of a spider, but I felt the white beady eyes were necessary to make them seem more critter-like.
